Google has confirmed that Top Stories carousels are now fully live within AI Overviews in the United States for mobile users. A Google spokesperson confirmed the rollout to Search Engine Land on July 17, 2026, and the feature is also covered by Search Engine Roundtable.

This is not a test. This is a confirmed production rollout.

What Changed

When users search for queries about developing or time-sensitive topics, they will now see a news carousel embedded directly inside the AI Overview — before, below, or alongside the AI-generated summary. Google has described this as surfacing “fresh perspectives, new updates, and prominent links” within AI Overviews.

The carousel will also highlight a user’s Preferred Sources, tying Google’s news personalisation layer into the AI Overview experience for the first time.

The feature was originally announced at Google I/O in May 2026 alongside a broader push to make timely articles more visible across more query types. The July 17 confirmation marks it as fully deployed in the US on mobile, not merely in testing.

What This Means for SEO Practitioners

For publishers and news-focused clients, the implications are direct.

Top Stories traffic was already being disrupted by the spread of AI Overviews across more query types. The assumption was that news content sat in its own carousel beneath or separate from AI summaries. That assumption is now outdated. Top Stories are inside the AI Overview unit.

For queries about developing topics — breaking news, ongoing events, recently published announcements — the AI Overview is no longer a competitor to the Top Stories placement. It is now the container for it. This changes how news content needs to compete.

A site that does not appear in AI Overviews for a given news query may now lose visibility it would previously have had in the standalone Top Stories carousel. The two surfaces are merging.

The Preferred Sources integration also signals that Google’s personalisation layer — which users can configure through Google News — now has a direct influence on what appears inside AI Overviews on mobile. For publishers, this reinforces the importance of Google News Publisher Center setup, verified authorship, and consistent publication history.

What to Do Now

For publisher and media clients:

  • Confirm that Google News Publisher Center is properly configured and verified. If your client’s site is not indexed in Google News, it cannot appear in these AI Overview news carousels.
  • Audit structured data. NewsArticle schema with accurate datePublished and author markup remains the baseline for news indexation. Ensure it is in place and crawlable.
  • Review article freshness. For developing stories, updates with explicit timestamps signal relevance to Google’s freshness signals. Thin or stale rewrites of wire copy will not compete.
  • Consider Preferred Sources UX — Google’s Preferred Sources feature is user-driven, but publishers can indirectly benefit by building direct subscription or newsletter relationships that create brand recognition and prompt users to select them.

For non-publisher clients:

This rollout is largely a news-specific change. If your clients do not publish time-sensitive news content, there is no immediate action required. However, for any client publishing regular content on trending topics, monitor for shifts in how AI Overviews display for query types that were previously showing standalone Top Stories.

AI Mode, which runs on Gemini 3.5 Flash, is a separate experience from standard AI Overviews and is not affected by this specific change.

What Google Has Not Confirmed

Google has not confirmed a timeline for desktop rollout or international expansion beyond the US. Early reports suggest the rollout may be uneven — some US mobile users are seeing it consistently while others are not. Google has not released click-through or traffic data related to this placement, so the net effect on publisher referral traffic remains to be measured.
