This is Google’s second broad core update of 2026, following the March 2026 core update.
Why This Update Is Different
This rollout launched the same week Google unveiled its biggest Search changes in more than 25 years at I/O 2026. AI Mode crossed one billion monthly users. Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default model for AI Mode globally. Google redesigned the Search bar itself around AI, describing it as a fundamental shift in how people interact with Search.
That timing matters for anyone interpreting data right now: sites are facing shifting core ranking signals and an expanding AI Overviews footprint simultaneously. Google hasn’t published specific guidance for this update beyond its standard helpful content recommendations, and it has not introduced any new ranking systems alongside it.
What Early Signals Show
Community reports from the first week of the rollout indicate thin informational content and AI-generated text without meaningful human editing is losing visibility. Sites with strong topical authority, named expert contributors, and verifiable first-hand experience appear to be holding or gaining ground. Google has not confirmed these patterns officially — they are based on early practitioner observations and should be treated as directional, not definitive, until the rollout completes.
This is consistent with Google’s broader infrastructure direction: AI Overviews and AI Mode depend on citing credible sources, so quality enforcement has become structurally more consequential than it was pre-AI search.
For scale: AI Overviews now appear in roughly 25–26% of all U.S. searches and close to 50% of informational queries.
